It is the systematic taking apart of a structure by hand in order to salvage as much of the building materials as possible for reuse and thereby divert them from entering the waste stream.  Did you know that somewhere around 50% of greenhouse gas emissions are created from the building industry?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Deconstruction not only removes valuable reusable materials from being thrown away, it also creates "green collar" jobs and provides affordable building materials to the community.  Buying reused building materials keeps dollars in your local community rather than sending them off to some large corporation somewhere else.  Deconstruction is just one example of the ideals of sustaining and preserving our world put into practice in a way that benefits the earth and us, the people who inhabit it.
